I don’t often succumb to Instagram ads but I’m pretty sure that’s how I first found out about Grown Up Show & Tell. I immediately sent it to a friend & said, “We should do this for mahjong!”
(Of course that’s the topic I picked, I’ve made it my entire personality and I never shut up about it.)
I applied to be a presenter, was selected, and last Tuesday I got up in front of 60 or so people to talk for 5 minutes about why it’s not just a game for grandmas anymore!
I loved presenting, but it was even more fun to listen to what the other presenters shared. The topics included:
🥊 Regional Fast Food Chain Royal Rumble
💰 Why Taxes are So Hard
🍟 The History of McDonaldland Characters
🫖 Day in the Life of an Herbal Tea Farmer
🀄️ The History & Rebirth of American Mahjong
🌄 Why are Sunsets So Cool (It’s Physics!)
Every single presenter was hilarious and they got up there with no notes, a couple slides, & crushed it. Meanwhile, I had an entire double-sided page of everything I wanted to remember to say and still didn’t remember to say everything!
It was organized by a woman named Mary Doctor who started doing these types of things a year ago & now spends her time organizing niche events around the city. She’s only in Chicago (for now!) but if you want to bring this to an event space / brewery / coffee shop near you, reach out to her for info!
Oh you like mahjong? 😜
