Welcome to What I Bought!
As a chronically nosey person with a penchant for oversharing herself, I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about what I spend money on, what other people spend money on, what I want to spend money on, what I would spend money on if I won the lottery, etc.
This series will feature a curated list of things I spent my real American dollars on — purchases I find the most interesting or ridiculous, including the amount I spent and my rationale behind it. This first one is available to everyone so you can get a sense of what to expect, but moving forward it will be behind a paywall so I can share personal money things in a private space.
All my 1 Thing/Week posts will always & forever be free, so if that’s what you signed up for then fear not, nothing is changing! But for my fellow nosey people, I hope you will find this as fun to read as I find to write!
$6.54 + $8.71 for Peacock Premium on two accounts
No one warns you how annoying it is to merge your streaming accounts when you get married, so we’ve somehow ended up with multiple subscriptions.
I do remember upgrading to commercial free to watch something at some point, but it wasn’t working so I had to do it twice. My best guess is that I’ve been paying for commercial free on both my account and my husband’s and I really should figure it out asap.
(Spoiler, I just got charged again for September so this did not happen!!!)
$14.86 for a single can of Pringles at our resort in Punta Cana
We went on a very lovely vacation to the Dominican Republic in August and there was not a single snack to be found on the resort. I was so desperate for something salty & crunchy that I broke down and got Pringles from the gift shop.
$223.35 for a post-vacation facial & products
I booked this while on vacation, sitting in a lounger by the pool as sweat poured down my face and I reapplied sunscreen for the third time that day. (Don’t be like me & go to the Caribbean in August.)
$22.09 for a lot of candy at Dollar Tree
Dollar Tree is the best place to source candy for candy salad!
$30 for two extra NMJL cards from the National Mah Jongg League
This organization is like the mob for mahjong, but I’m a sucker and want to have additional cards on hand to play with friends.
$74.43 for burgers & happy hour at our local spot
This is our Friday tradition & we look forward to it every week. We’ve been going every Friday since the end of March — sometimes I balk at the expense (how does it add up so quickly?!) but it’s such a nice way to start the weekend.
$16.93 for my meds & a wedding card at CVS
I walked in to pick up my prescription right in the middle of their lunch break, so I wandered the aisles and picked out a wedding card for some friends while I waited.
$33.22 for some THC seltzers at Binny’s
I’m not sure when our liquor stores started carrying THC beverages but I’m happy about it! They’re more gentle than what I’ve seen at the dispensaries and are a nice alternative to vodka seltzers when you want to feel a little something without sacrificing your whole day.
$7.06 + $7.06 + $6.78 for energy drinks at the corner store
I’ll probably keep my husband’s spending out of these posts but this one made me laugh. Poor guy had a tough weekend volunteering at a street festival — he’s on the board and put in 12+ hour days over the weekend and needed a little extra boost to get through the workdays the following week.
A Note from Jenn
Since this is the first installment of this new series, I welcome any feedback you have! This is not a complete accounting of my spending; I left a lot of things out. Do you want more line items? Fewer? More in-depth reflection on why I bought something? I’d love to hear it!
